Evaluating the environmental sustainability strategies of the housekeeping department: the case of an international hotel chain in Hong Kong, China

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use the case an international luxury hotel chain in Hong Kong illustrate general environmentally-friendly practices housekeeping. Six in-depth interviews were conducted with housekeeping department staff evaluate effectiveness Hotel’s environmental sustainability by analysing their benefits and limitations. Results reveal that all informants acknowledged strategies adopted Hotel, which can benefit stakeholders. Despite multiple green housekeeping, several may not be as significant expected misaligned expectations from management actual create excessive workload for frontline room attendants a lack policy enforcement supportive policies. Therefore, hotels should keep mutual communication between employees prior conducting environmentally- employee-friendly practices. Given labour-intensive nature industry, ensure employment equality place adequate environmentally friendly support employees.
